Surprise Inside Red Velvet Cupcakes

I wanted to do a fun project for the weekend. After some googling I came across what is known as a surprise inside cake. It's like a cake within a cake.  I decided to try out one of the easy to do surprise inside cakes with a heart shape cut-out. This cupcake is perfect to celebrate Valentine's Day.

I bought yellow butter cake and used a heart shaped cookie cutter on it. You can use any shapes you like according to the theme of your party. I used a basic red velvet recipe for this. You can use cake mix to save time.

Follow these simple steps to make the lovely cupcakes.

1.   Cut out the heart shapes, freeze them.

2.   Meanwhile, prepare the red velvet cake mix. You don't want the red velvet to rise too much as it will push the hearts up and the shape of the cake will get wonky, so watch the baking powder.

3.   Once the red velvet mix is ready, place the hearts in the cupcake liners.

4.   Pour the red velvet mix over the heart. Ensure that the red velvet mix covers the hearts. Remember which side is the front of the heart so that when you cut it in half you will see the heart shape.

5.   Pop them in the oven come back later to watch them grow.

6.   Meanwhile, prepare the cream cheese frosting.

7.   When the cakes have cooled, pipe the icing onto the cakes.

Happy baking for your loved ones!
